6 Hurt When School Bus Overturns In Baltimore County
PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- A school bus filled with children lands on its side, in a ditch. It happened Friday morning. Six people were injured.
Monique Griego has more from investigators.
This was a single car accident. According to police, that school bus somehow lost control, veered off the road, hit a bridge and then crashed into a ditch.
Frightening moments for Baltimore County parents, who arrived on Greenspring Avenue to find their child's school bus off the road, overturned, facing the wrong way 10 feet down in a small creek.
"I can't imagine the fear of the parents when the parents came to pick up their kids from the accident," said Diana Spencer, Baltimore County Schools spokesperson.
Baltimore County police say the bus was carrying 10 Pikesville Middle School students when it lost control, veered off the road then crashed into the ditch.
"It's, like, right up on the hill, so whenever one wheel goes off it kind of pulls you off," said Edison Geller, lives nearby. "Occasionally, you'll hear of cars flipping over, flipping off the side of the road."
Inside, the students were tossed around, and with the main door now facing the sky, everyone escaped through a back roof hatch. Five kids and the driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
"Everyone was mobile and able to get off the bus," Spencer said.
The skidmarks on the road and the damage to a sign show the path the school bus went during the crash. And now that it's gone, you can see just how deep the ditch really is.
"It's really miraculous we didn't have any significant injuries. Obviously, you see the condition of the bus," said Div. Chief Michael Robinson, Baltimore County Fire.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the accident. While that will take some time, one thing that's clear is just how lucky the students were.
"I'm sure it was terrifying. No seat belts on the bus. Maybe that's something they need to take into consideration," said Geller.
District leaders say the driver of the school bus will be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard procedure. They will also be reviewing footage from three cameras on the bus.
Police and the Baltimore County School District are both conducting investigations into what happened.
