Schizophrenic Man Going To Hospital For Killing Grandparents
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A western Maryland man is getting psychiatric care instead of prison time after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for stabbing his paternal grandparents.
A judge in Hagerstown found 20-year-old Joseph W. Minoglio not criminally responsible Monday for the March 2014 slayings of Joseph M. and Peggy Minoglio at their home Keedysville.
Minoglio is being treated for schizophrenia at the maximum-security Clifton T. Perkins psychiatric hospital in Jessup. He is entitled to administrative hearings at least once a year to determine if he should be released.
His parents say Minoglio's symptoms appeared several months before the incident. They say his behavior was passive under an initial treatment regimen. But he became agitated and began hallucinating after his medication was changed about two weeks before the stabbings.
