Schenning Named First Assistant U.S. Attorney
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Veteran federal prosecutor Stephen Schenning has been named as a top deputy to Maryland U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein.
The office announced Tuesday that Schenning has been appointed as First Assistant U.S. Attorney, which it describes as the highest-ranking career position in the office.
He replaces Stuart Goldberg, who will become chief of staff to James Cole, the newly appointed deputy attorney general.
Schenning served previously as First Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1997 to 2001 and was interim U.S. Attorney in 2001. Since then, he's been a senior litigation counsel with the office.
He was also an assistant U.S. attorney from 1984 to 1989 before a stint in private practice.
Rosenstein says in a statement that Schenning has "a hard-earned reputation for diligence and integrity."
