San Francisco Mayor Visits Baltimore To Make Good On Super Bowl Bet
BALTIMORE (WJZ)— Cashing in on a Super Bowl bet. Two mayors from opposite sides of the country got together for a day of service and blue crabs.
Jessica Kartalija has more on how San Francisco's mayor made good on his bet.
If you're a 49rs fan, a loss to the Ravens means an unhappy Harbaugh and two crabby mayors.
"We were betting between Dungeness crab, which is San Francisco's crab, and blue crab here, so this is a delight!" said San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee.
Lee got a lesson from Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in picking crabs, and then making crab cakes at Faidley's in Lexington Market.
"We're going to teach him about seafood--real crabs--then we're going to put him to work!" Rawlings-Blake said.
It isn't just about crabs, it's all about a day of service. The mayors had decided that the mayor of the losing team would come visit the city of the mayor of the winning team for a day of service.
Rawlings-Blake cashed in on the Ravens win as Lee got to work, sprucing up a West Baltimore police station and working with AmeriCorps to make Baltimore beautiful.
"I think San Francisco is a lovely city. But I'm glad I didn't have to go there in payment of a debt," Rawlings-Blake said.
Speaking of debts . . .
"I had a good friend who is his chief of police, Greg Suhr, and we had a bet. He ended up doing Ray Lewis' dance because he lost the bet," said Baltimore City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts.
While San Francisco didn't take home the Lombardi this year, they charmed this city with their gracious defeat.
"I'm sorry that it was under these circumstances that he had to come back, but after he tasted our crab cake, I know Mayor Lee will be back again," Rawlings-Blake said.
If for some crazy reason the Ravens lost, Rawlings-Blake would have spent the day in San Francisco.
The Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31 in February's Super Bowl.
