Rowhouse Fire Kills Mother And 2 Sons
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A devastating loss. A pregnant mother and her two sons are killed when flames erupt inside their rowhouse.
Monique Griego reports as people remember the family.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blaze that burned through 10 Baltimore rowhouses. The family is mourning and searching for a way to go on.
"Nothing in life can prepare you for a day like this," cousin Gerard Massey said. "I thought I'd seen it all until [Thursday]morning."
Balloons were left at the doorstep of Michelle Manigo's South Pulaski Street home.
The pregnant mother died with her two sons, 11-year old Tyquis and 7-year old Jaquis, when flames ripped through their home.
Family members are shocked. Loved ones light candles in memory.
"I'm going to miss them," cousin and coach Massey said. "They were my little cousins, but they were more like my sons."
The two boys played football for the Arbutus Golden Eagles. The Athletic Association has formed a donation fund for the family.
"They wanted to play every single play, every position," Arbutus Golden Eagles coach Matt Kuhn said. "It didn't matter, they were always asking to play."
The boys' 13-year old brother, Marquis, was not home when the fire struck.
Marquis went to football practice, despite the recent death of his family because he said his mom would have wanted him there.
Teammates cried on the field when they heard the news.
The team will dedicate their season to Tyquis and Jaquis by wearing the boys' numbers on their helmets.
"We're going to win it all for them," Massey said.
Jaquis, 7, would have played safety in this Saturday's game. The team will play one man down in his honor.
The Manigo Family fund is set up at the Chesapeake Bank of Maryland in Arbutus for donations.
