Route 50 Reopens In Annapolis With Sinkhole Repair
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Road crews have reopened a stretch of busy U.S. Route 50 in Annapolis after a three-foot sinkhole opened up on the highway.
All lanes of the highway reopened Thursday morning. Crews worked overnight to fill the hole with stone to stabilize the road and installed a concrete patch on the surface.
Maryland State Police say the hole opened up about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Officials closed a mile-long stretch of the eastbound lanes of the highway. The closure had been expected to continue into Thursday's commute.
The Maryland State Highway Administration says engineers found a metal pipe that's part of the highway's drainage system had deteriorated and collapsed. The hole was several feet deep, but crews made emergency repairs.
