Route 50 Reopened After Leak From Trailer Shuts Down The Highway
WHITE HALL, Md. (WJZ)-- Route 50 has been reopened and traffic is now moving after the highway was closed on both directions near White Hall Road over three hours ago.
Authorities from Anne Arundel County investigated a leak from a tractor-trailer. A spokeswoman for the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) said the trailer has now been moved to Sandy Point where the chemical will be loaded off the vehicle. She said the chemical was dry cleaning fluid that evaporates as soon as it is released into the air, and added that there was no environmental damage from the spill.
Capt. Mike Perry reported that the trailer pulled over to the side of the road around 3:30 p.m. after it noticed that it was leaking a chemical it was carrying.
The incident happened on eastbound Route 50.
Route 50 and Route 2 were gridlocked and Route 50 was backed up all the way to Route 97.
The cause of the spill remains under investigation.
