2 Dead, Toddler Airlifted After Route 50 Wrong Way Crash
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Two people are dead and a toddler with critical injuries has been airlifted from the scene after an accident on Route 50 near Route 2/Exit 27 in Anne Arundel County.
Authorities say 22-year-old Laura Ashley Murphy of Salisbury and her 14-month-old son were in a black 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 50, when Murphy's vehicle crashed head-on with a silver 2016 Mercedes SUV.
Murphy was pronounced dead following the accident, while the toddler who was also in that vehicle was been airlifted to Johns Hopkins Pediatric.
A man identified as Robert Skidmore, 66, was extricated from the Mercedes after being trapped and airlifted to Shock Trauma, where he later died.
A third vehicle, occupied by Anthony Stanley, 59, was also involved in the accident. The 2016 Nissan 350-Z sustained minor damage and Stanley was not injured.
According to police, Murphy was driving westbound in the eastbound lane approximately one quarter mile east of the Severn River Bridge when the crash occurred. It is still unknown where she got onto Route 50 in the first place.
Crews are still investigating.
Authorities say the eastbound lanes of Route 50 were closed for several hours.
"It was just really sad you know watching the cars be in ditches, and you know like white sheets, and you know like the helicopters, and the trauma unit," says Patricia Pressley.
"It was terrible. Mostly on the side roads were backed up as well," Tom Gavin says.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, 300 to 400 people are killed each year in wrong way crashes in the U.S..
Head on or sideswipe collisions at high speeds end up being more severe.
There's no word yet on the condition of the baby.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan released the following statement following the crash:
"The First Lady and I are heartbroken to hear of this fatal crash on Route 50. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim of this accident, and our prayers are with those who were injured and remain in serious condition. We are extremely grateful to the first responders who continue to work at the scene to keep everyone safe."
