Rob Long: Something Magical Happens
Okay, I'll admit. You can take this blog with a grain of salt. I am a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan who's been desperately seeking a winning season. I have, like many of you, endured 14 long losing seasons of losing baseball and all I'm seeking is a ray of hope for this organization.
The O's have just completed a road trip that included a five-game winning streak. That winning streak came against the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Is that, along with the clutch baseball that this team has been playing, part of that ray of hope?
The Birds have been getting good pitching from the starters and relievers alike. They've been so good that first baseman Chris Davis pitched two scoreless innings at Fenway Park, striking out Adrian Gonzalez in the process. That's when you know you're hot.
The Birds are perched atop the American League East and face the best team in the American League, the Texas Rangers, for four games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The O's have some holes in the offense, but they have enough players hitting that they've been able to cover them up. They are playing poor defense but their pitching hasn't given in to poor errors in the field. They've played good team baseball.
The Baltimore Orioles are 19-9 and own winning records against two A.L. East teams. While some fans would claim the national media isn't giving the team any love, who cares at this time? If they keep playing this way, Buck Showalter will get manager of the year considerations and his former colleagues at ESPN will be forced to pay closer attention.
