Rob Long: Game Seven
Two of the best words in sports are "Game Seven". I don't care if it's Game Seven of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, Game Seven of the NBA Finals or Game Seven of the World Series. I don't know if there's more anticipation for any one game than Game Seven of one of those series.
The Super Bowl is one game. You know that going into the event and so is the NCAA basketball final. They sell that as the Final Four, but the championship itself is one game. They are great events that I wouldn't miss but they are what they are.
However, when you talk about Game Seven, you're talking about a series where two teams have gone back and fourth and have provided enough drama for six games and now it comes down to a one game championship. I just don't see how it gets any better than that.
On Wednesday, Madison Bumgarner gave us something to remember and to talk about for a long time. He stepped on stage, three days after pitching a gem in game five and put in a "dude" performance to preserve the win for the San Francisco Giants. That's what Game Seven is all about. The Giants have now won three World Series titles in five years. They are baseball's current dynasty.
As for the Kansas City Royals. It remains to be seen whether they can turn a great run into a contender in the American League for the foreseeable future. They have some decisions to make soon. They had swagger and they played a great series. Yet, for some reason, I feel like it was a flash in the pan. We shall see.
