Rising Baltimore Psychologist Finds Education Paramount To Career Advancement
With top hospitals like Johns Hopkins, Mercy and Mount Washington in the area, it's no surprise that Baltimore's psychologists serve as an important backbone to the medical field working closely with children, families, educators, health organizations and many more to solve problems. By helping people to better relate with one another and teaching patients how to thrive in their surrounding environments, a psychologist's job is never done.

Kyana Beckles is already aware of this trend and determined to achieve further success in the field. She presently works as a lead research assistant in the Behavioral Lab at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) – Robert H. Smith School of Business. Additionally, she is an associate consultant at C. M. Cummings + Associates, LLC, which helps health care companies solve business problems to enhance performance and, consequently, economic value. How has education prepared you for your job?
"Education offers access to resources such as teachers, computers, field trips and databases. These experiences bring information closer to students and open up our world."
Could you have reached your present position without your education endeavors?
"In my field, education is an absolute necessity. Most experts in Psychology are consultants at the doctoral level. I have seen some at the masters level, but none at the bachelors level."
Where did you earn your degree(s)?
"My undergraduate degree is from Coppin State University – a B.S in Management and Psychology. I am currently enrolled in the master's program for Industrial Organizational Psychology at UMBC."
What continuing education is required for your specific role?
"In order to advance to the highest positions in personnel selection, I would need to complete a Ph.D. (maybe not now, but at some point)."
How do you keep your skills up to date?
"Keeping my skills sharp is why I returned to school. Once I complete my master's degree, I plan to stay sharp by participating with professional organizations in my field. I also plan to complete certifications that will enhance my skills. Furthermore, I maintain professional memberships in order to have access to databases with relevant articles, white papers and the latest research.
