Rex Hoggard Recaps First Round Of Open Championship
Rex Hoggard from the Golf Channel joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to recap the first round of the Open Championship at Royal Troon.
The biggest story coming out of Thursday's opening round was Phil Mickelson's impressive 8-under par 63 which tied a major record. Mickelson's birdie putt on 18 for a championship record 62 lipped out. Hoggard talked about Phil's impressive day. "He knew exactly what was on the line. I found it interesting he said didn't even start thinking about 62 until he birdied 17…He did a heck of a job coming down the stretch just to give himself an opportunity."
There were over 50 rounds under par Thursday. Hoggard spoke about the good conditions of the golf course. "It's not overly-demanding like were used to in a major championship…It's probably the fairest of all the Open rotation courses. Everything's right out there in front of you. I think the guys enjoy it."
Not every golfer took advantage of the near-perfect scoring conditions. Hoggard said his biggest surprise was the world's number one golfer Jason Day shooting a 2-over par 73. "We expected more out of him. Last year he played very, very well at St. Andrews. It seemed like he had solved his links puzzle, and yet he comes out here and he's got a left miss going which were not used to seeing and he didn't seem to be very comfortable on the greens."
