Residents In Cherry Hill Turn Anger Into Action After 1-Year-Old Is Shot & Killed
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There is anger over the senseless killing of a one-year-old child by masked gunmen. Police have two men in custody, but there may be more suspects.
Kai Jackson has the outrage from the Cherry Hill community and local leaders.
As the police investigation intensifies, residents are turning their anger into action.
Members of the NAACP, the city state's attorney, police and others join Cherry Hill residents on Wednesday for a vigil. They are parents, children and neighbors who are heartbroken and fed up that 16-month-old Carter Scott was shot and killed inside a car Friday.
"And then to have to see a baby lie dying on the sidewalk because of somebody who did not care about life," said Minister Cleda Walker, community leader.
Police say little Carter was in the back passenger seat of the car driven by his father, 23-year-old Rashaw Scott. As the car was pulling out of the Cherry Dale apartment complex, police say 26-year-old Cornell Harvey and 20-year-old Eddie Tarver approached the vehicle and opened fire.
A bullet to the leg killed the boy. His father was hit, survived and rushed to the hospital.
Jackson: "We're hearing that there could yet be more arrests in this case. Can you tell us whether or not that's accurate?
"I can tell you that there are certainly more than two suspects that were involved in this and our investigation continues in order to identify them and make the arrests as necessary," said Baltimore City State's Attorney Gregg Bernstein.
The sight of the 1-year-old baby dying in the street in Cherry Hill is something no one wanted to see. A tragedy that those who saw will never forget.
"I just thank God that I was able to pray for the baby before they took him and put him on the ambulance," said Barbara Petty, resident.
Harvey and Tarver are both charged with first and second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
The result of violence and message against it is clear:
"No more of this stuff! Simply no more!" said community members.
At last check, the boy's father is listed in serious condition. At this time, the city state's attorney says it is inappropriate for him to speculate on a motive. He says at the end of the day it doesn't matter. At the end of the day, the life of a 1-year-old boy has been taken away.
Carter Scott's mom Tweeted out: "My world is gone. What kind of man shoots a baby?"
Cherry Hill residents will hold a prayer walk on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the neighborhood.
