Republican Larry Hogan Looking To Democrats For Gubernatorial Upset Victory
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)— The countdown is on! It's just four days left until voters cast their ballots for the next governor of Maryland, and Republican Larry Hogan looking to Democrats.
Investigative reporter Mike Hellgren has more on the final push from Larry Hogan.
Hogan did not make any appearances in or around Baltimore on Friday but plans to later this weekend.
Hogan hopes to turn deep blue Maryland at least a bit purple.
To get to power in Annapolis, he's got to get some Democrats to cross over.
He certainly sounded confident at a recent rally.
"We think we're going to be the biggest upset victory in the entire country," Hogan said on Wednesday.
And early voting numbers show some positive signs.
Counties where the biggest percentage of eligible voters headed to polls include Republican-leaning Talbot, Queen Anne's, Kent and Anne Arundel.
Hogan, who worked in the administration of former Republican Gov. Bob Ehrlich is also counting on Baltimore County, which was key to Ehrlich's upset victory.
But the early voting totals there show 61 percent of those who cast ballots are registered Democrats.
Hogan does have several big rallies planned for the weekend as he tries to keep momentum going.
He kept quiet Friday, declining WJZ's request for an interview. Is that a sign of confidence or not?
Star Republican Chris Christie will be in Baltimore on Sunday on the stump for the fourth time for Hogan. And the Republican Governor's Association, which he chairs, recently bought almost $300,000 in new ads.
"We're about jobs, middle class families, and restoring the economy," an ad says.
Many of the ads focus on his opponent's relationship with Gov. Martin O'Malley and tax increases.
With just days to go, Hogan hopes that message will pay off at the polls.
Christie will be this Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Patapsco Arena on Annapolis Road in Baltimore.
