Report: D.C. Bridges Need Repairs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new report says Washington has a higher percentage of bridges in need of repair than the national average.
The report released Wednesday by the advocacy group Transportation for America found 30 of the city's 244 bridges structurally deficient, or 12.3 percent. The national average is 11 percent. Transportation for America director James Corless says structurally deficient bridges aren't unsafe, but the designation is a warning sign.
In Maryland, 6.9 percent of bridges are in poor condition. In Virginia it's 9.4 percent.
A department of transportation spokesman in D.C., John Lisle, says fixing the bridges is one of the agency's top priorities.
