Report Calls For Review Of D.C. Tinted Window Law
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new report says District of Columbia police officers need better training on enforcing the law on tinted vehicle windows.
The report from the Police Complaints Board also says the mayor should appoint a task force to review the existing law and propose changes if necessary.
The board says the existing law raises concerns about the potential for racial profiling. It says 97 percent of window tint-related complaints filed between 2007 and 2012 were from black motorists.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier said in a written response that she strongly disagrees with the report's conclusions and recommendations. She says tinted car windows remains a serious safety concern for police, and she says she disagrees with a recommendation to change the law so it applies only to vehicles registered in the District.
