Rep. Elijah Cummings' Funeral Set For Next Friday In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A funeral for former Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings has been scheduled for Friday, October 25.
The funeral will be held at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 6020 Marion Drive in Baltimore, where Rep. Cummings worshiped for more than four decades.
A wake will begin at 8 a.m. with the funeral to follow at 10 a.m.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that Rep. Elijah Cummings will lie in state in National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol on Thursday, October 24.
Cummings served in the House for more than 20 years and was Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
Cummings died early Thursday morning at age 68.
Tributes continued to pour in for Rep. Cummings on Friday.
"The House has a huge hole in its heart right now, he was a great man."
"His legacy will undoubtedly outlive everyone in this room today," Rep. Kevin McCarthy said. "Legacies of change last a very long time."
Cummings was a champion for Baltimore. He fought for funding to protect witnesses after a drug dealer murdered seven people in 2002.
While political battles got the attention, the core of his work was helping the people he served.
"He never forgot the people in his neighborhood, the city, the state," Rep. Jamie Raskin said. "It ended up being about the American people. He was a gift Maryland gave to the country."
In lieu of flowers, Cummings' family is asking donations be made to the Elijah Cummings Youth Program.
