Rep. Edwards Submits Alternative Redistricting Map
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards has submitted an alternative congressional redistricting map that she says addresses concerns about diluting minority voting strength.
Edwards made her proposal public on Monday, as lawmakers were gathering for a special session to redraw Maryland's eight congressional districts for the next 10 years.
Edwards says her proposal allows for the possibility of minority representation in one of three congressional districts in Montgomery County.
She says it achieves the goals set forth by Gov. Martin O'Malley and his advisory panel, while increasing minority voting representation in Congressional districts four and five.
Lawmakers will hold a hearing Monday afternoon on the governor's proposed map, as well as to hear alternative proposals.
