Reimold, Pie In Competition To Make Orioles Roster
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) -- Nolan Reimold and Felix Pie expected to spend spring training in a competition to become the starting left fielder for the Baltimore Orioles.
Instead, they're locked in a duel to earn a spot on the 25-man roster.
When the Orioles signed Vladimir Guerrero to serve as their full-time designated hitter, Luke Scott surrendered his role as DH and was penciled in as the starting left fielder.
That created a problem for Reimold and Pie, who have started there in the past. One of them could remain in a bench role, but it's unlikely manager Buck Showalter will carry both.
Pie is out of minor league options, so he'd have to pass through waivers before being outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk. Reimold has another option remaining, which puts him in a precarious position.
