Rehiring Sought For Fired Youth Center Teachers
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Lawmakers from western Maryland are seeking the rehiring of ten teachers who were dismissed last month from the state's juvenile justice system.
The youth center teachers were told in March that they would have to reapply for their jobs, but then learned by early last month that they would not be retained.
The Times-News of Cumberland reports that four state lawmakers have asked Gov. Martin O'Malley to have the fired teachers rehired. The letter was also sent to Juvenile Services Secretary Sam Abed and Lillian Lowery, the state superintendent of schools. The lawmakers are seeking a review of the teachers' dismissal.
Western Maryland has four youth centers, including three in Garrett County and one in Allegany County.
