Record Number Of Marylanders Traveling This Holiday Weekend
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Traveling this Memorial Day weekend? You are not alone. A record number of Marylanders are expected to drive, fly and ride.
George Solis has what you need to know as you get out the door.
If you're flying, get here early. TSA lines---as we've seen nationally---are long and only projected to get worse. TSA officials suggest that if you are flying, think about prohibited items and limiting the size of your carry-on.
Whether it be by train, plane or car, AAA estimates more than 38 million Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend. In Maryland, a record number of people are taking trips: more than 814,000. Most of them are getting there by car.
"We're seeing very favorable gas prices, despite the recent uptick in prices," said Ragina Averella, AAA.
Those not driving are flying, mainly because of cheaper flights.
The holiday travel comes at a time the shorthanded TSA is also being tested to keep security lines moving. Travelers tell WJZ lines at BWI have actually been pretty good, considering.
TSA officials recommend pre-checks where you can get them.
"You don't have to take off your shoes, take things out so I find it to be much easier," said one traveler.
While less Americans are expected to travel by train or bus, one man says it's been smooth sailing for his trip.
"Why run into traffic? It's a nice ride on the train; have a good time," said another.
Bottom line: no matter how you choose to get there: do it safely.
Also, remember that police will be out in full force on the roads this weekend.
