Rebecca T. Ruark Wins Chesapeake Skipjack Race

DEAL ISLAND, Md. (AP) -- The skipjack Rebecca T. Ruark has come out on top again in an annual race held for the iconic Chesapeake Bay work boats.

Capt. Wade Murphy sailed the skipjack to her 11th win in the race Monday. Murphy, who had been tied with Stanford White Jr., with 10 victories each, now holds the record for victories in the race.

The boats are the last sail-powered fishing fleet in North America. Most are nearly a century old and many are owned by nonprofit groups, but still dredge for oysters as part of educational programs.

The Daily Times of Salisbury reported that 11 skipjacks took part in the Labor Day race. The Ida Mae and Capt. John Price took second and Capt. Walt Benton took third place aboard the Somerset.
