Ravens Spend Tuesday Morning With Elementary Students
FINKSBURG, Md. (WJZ) -- Hundreds of lucky elementary school students spent Tuesday morning with the Ravens.
Weijia Jiang explains how several star players are reaching out.
It may not be Friday but Sandymount Elementary in Finksburg was undeniably purple.
"I'm amazingly shocked. I had a weird feeling in my stomach this morning players were going to show up and they did," said Hunter Frazee.
Baltimore Ravens Haloti Ngata, Ray Rice, Sam Koch and Ricky Williams spent Tuesday morning with 500 students for the NFL's Play 60 Challenge, a campaign to get kids to spend at least an hour a day doing something physical.
"All the Ravens want to make sure you have 60 minutes a day and to eat healthy," said Mitch Clark, student.
Ngata helped organize the event.
"Now that we have all these gadgets, iPods, iPads, I think kids spend a lot of time with those things. To get them outside to play is a great message," Ngata said.
The defensive tackle may have had a monster touchdown during Sunday's game against the Rams but some kids took him to school when they learned new exercises. They also talked about healthy foods.
"They eat a lot of oatmeal and fruits and vegetables," said Zach Caltrider.
The Ravens learned a little something too.
"I'm going to have to incorporate some of the kids' touchdown dances. Have to take all the requests into consideration," Rice said.
And finally, to kick off Play 60, the players did just that, turning a regular day into the recess of a lifetime.
"It makes me feel really, really happy," said Brie Jadra.
Students will track their physical activity for the next two weeks. Two lucky winners, a boy and a girl, will be invited to the Ravens game against the 49ers in November.
Several Baltimore-area schools are taking part in the Play 60 Challenge.
