Ravens Hope New Football Field Will Keep Kids Out Of Trouble

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Getting kids active and keeping them out of trouble is the goal of a new field in Southeast Baltimore.

Monique Griego was there as the Ravens helped kick things off.

It's not every day you get to test your skills against the NFL's best.

"The Ravens players [are] trying to help their community, too," said James Wells, Hampstead Hill Academy.

Several Baltimore Ravens ran drills with students in East Baltimore to celebrate the opening of a brand new community football field near Lombard and Broadway.

"When I was young, I always had somewhere to go and play and I think it's important for kids to get outside and play and develop amongst each other," said Lee Evans, Baltimore Ravens.

Rainy weather kept the kids from testing out the turf but didn't dampen their spirits.

"I'm real excited because the Ravens players are here and makes it 10 times better," said Ryan Ransom, Hampstead Hill Academy.

The field was fixed up thanks to a grant sponsored by the Living Classrooms Foundation. Their goal was to give kids a running start at being healthy and active.

"This field will provide hope and opportunity for kids who do not have fields and places to play," said James Piper Bond, Living Classrooms Foundation.

The field is regulation-size and will be used by several elementary and middle schools in the area.

"I think taking the time, the energy and the money to build this field shows them that people do care," said Ricky Williams, Baltimore Ravens.

Living Classrooms teamed up with the city, the NFL and the Ravens to come up with the $250,000 needed to fix up the field.
