Ravens Hold Fundraiser For Japanese Tsunami Victims
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Thousands of Ravens fans turned out to autographs of their favorite players—all while helping the Japanese tsunami victims.
Andrea Fujii reports.
Ravens safety Haruki Nakamura teamed up with the Red Cross to organize the event at Ripken Stadium.
Nakamura—who has family in Japan—recruited his teammates, including Joe Flacco and Ed Reed, to sign autographs for the lines of fans.
They ultimately raised more than $56,000 for the Japanese relief efforts.
"We send the finances to them," said Frank Miller, American Red Cross. "They use the finances to buy materials, medical supplies. It also helps the local economy, but it's also more cost-effective."
The Red Cross says some fans plan to auction off what they got signed Saturday and donate those funds to the Red Cross.
