Rapist Recently Convicted For Crimes Committed In The 1980s
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Baltimore City jury convicted a man of two counts of first degree rape, two counts of sex offense in the first degree, two counts of first degree assault, and two counts of use of handgun during the commission of a crime of violence that happened in the 1980s.
State's Attorney Marylin Mosby said that after 33 years, the two rape victims finally get justice.
"Gavin is a star prosecutor in our office," said State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby. "Despite the challenges he faced in this case, he was able to secure justice for these women."
On January 2, 1982, the victims, who were 15 and 16 years old at the time, were leaving a shopping area on the 3400 block of Wilkins Avenue when John Hill, now 56 years old, approached them and ordered the girls to give him their money.
Hill then pulled out a gun and forced the girls to a secluded area where he raped and sexually assaulted both girls. As Hill was assaulting one of the girls, the other victim picked up a bottle and hit the defendant over the head.
As the girls ran away, Hill fired his gun striking one of the victims in the arm. Several days later a witness informed police that Hill had confessed to the crime. The victims identified Hill in a photo array, but for 33 years they would have to wait for justice after the evidence was lost.
"Although the physical evidence in this case had been lost, we were able to track down the victims, and the original witness in this case," said Patashnick. "The Baltimore Police Sex Offense Unit and Detective Justin Stinnett were instrumental in assisting us in locating everyone involved in this case."
Hill is scheduled to be sentenced October 27.
He is already serving a 45 year sentence for kidnapping and battery. He was set to be released February 2016.
