Ranger Convicted Of Manslaughter In Roommate Death
ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A former Army Ranger has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and a handgun charge in the shooting death of his roommate, who served with him in Afghanistan.
A Montgomery County jury returned the verdict against Gary Smith on Wednesday. Smith was facing a second trial for the shooting death of Michael McQueen in September 2006 in the apartment they shared in Gaithersburg. A previous conviction was thrown out.
Smith faces up to 10 years in prison on the involuntary manslaughter charge and a minimum of five years on the handgun charge.
His attorney, Andrew Jezic, says he's gratified that his client was acquitted of second-degree murder but maintains that Smith is innocent. He plans to appeal.
McQueen's late father, Mike McQueen, was New Orleans bureau chief for The Associated Press.
