Rachel Morin investigation: Letters sent to Los Angeles high schools in hopes of identifying killer
BALTIMORE -- Months after Rachel Morin went missing and was later found dead along the Ma and Pa Trail in Harford County, her family is not backing down.
They're relentlessly trying to bring in tips that will lead to her killer.
"We need to find the suspect who did this so that nobody else needs to experience this loss during the holidays," Matthew McMahon, the father of Rachel's oldest child, said.
Morin's family, with the help of their attorney, is sending letters to five high schools in Los Angeles where the suspect was caught on surveillance video leaving a home after committing another crime there earlier this year.
"He could have been high school as early as two years ago," Morin Family Attorney Randolph Rice said. "So, if there's a teacher there who taught him and saw him every single day during the school year, hopefully that teacher would recognize who he is."
Morin went for a walk along the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail on August 5 around 6 p.m. She didn't return home that evening. Soon after, she was reported missing.
The next day, a search volunteer found the mother of five's body just off the trail.
Surveillance video of a suspect in the case was released in August. The suspect was caught on a doorbell camera at the scene of a home invasion and assault in Los Angeles in March. Detectives said DNA from that crime scene matches DNA found at Morin's.
For months, Morin's family has been taking matters into their own hands to help bring in leads.
Earlier this month, they sent 10,000 flyers to homes near the crime scene in LA.
"Remember, the story really has not been covered in Los Angeles as well as it has been covered here in Baltimore and in Maryland," Rice said. "So, we're hopeful that because maybe someone out there hasn't seen these images yet, that we're going to reach somebody."
Morin leaves behind her five kids.
"Unfortunately, there's going to be a huge gap in these holiday celebrations this year, both Thanksgiving and Christmas, because Rachel is not going to be here," McMahon said.
McMahon told WJZ her children are still hurting.
"The children are making progress, but the main progress they need is to have this guy apprehended," McMahon said.
The reward for information leading to an arrest in Rachel's murder is up to $30,000.
