Prosecutor: Murder Suspect Targeted Md. Man
CARTERET, N.J. (AP) -- Prosecutors say a Maryland man gunned down on a central New Jersey street this week was targeted by his alleged assailant.
Daniel Gillens, 21, of Newark was charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of Deonte Shackleford, a 26-year-old Baltimore resident.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan announced the arrest Saturday. But he didn't say why authorities believe Gillens targeted Shackleford, who was in New Jersey to visit relatives in Carteret.
Kaplan says the shooting occurred around 7:20 p.m. Friday.
Carteret police who happened to be on routine patrol in the area heard gunshots and soon found Shackleford wounded on a sidewalk. They also saw Gillens running from the scene and captured him after a short pursuit.
Shackleford died a short time later at a hospital.
