Pro Golfer Who Calls Annapolis Home Desperate To Find Dad
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- A tearful plea from a pro golfer who is desperate to find his dad. Billy Hurley III calls Annapolis home and broke down during a press event for a major tournament.
WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren with more on his heartbreak.
The family did file a missing persons report. It appears his dad left on his own.
Pro golfer Billy Hurley III laid his emotions bare, pleading for his dad, who's been missing for more than a week to come home.
"My dad took some clothes and he took some cash, he got in his truck and he drove away," said Hurley. "No one's heard from him since."
At 61 years old, Willard Hurley Junior has been a frequent presence at his son's tournaments. He lived with his wife of more than 30 years in Leesburg, Virginia.
His son lives in Annapolis with his wife and two children. He's the first Naval Academy graduate to make it on the PGA Tour. He's playing at the Quicken National this week with Tiger Woods.
"Maybe he sees it, like I said, checking my score, checking my tee time somehow and he realizes that it's just time to come home," said Hurley.
Hurley's dad is a former police officer. His family says he is physically and mentally well and gave no indication there were any problems.
It appears he is far from the Annapolis area. Police tracked his credit card to a hotel in Texarkana, Texas last week. They do not suspect foul play. He was driving his almost ten-year-old Ford pickup.
"We have no idea where he is," said Hurley.
It's rare for a pro athlete to make such an emotional public appeal, but Hurley says he felt he had to do it.
"Dad, we love you and we want you to come home. And I'm really coming to you guys and asking for help," said Hurley.
Hurley is continuing to play at the Quicken Loans National because he says he wants to draw attention to the case. He hopes his dad will see it and see just how much he is missed.
Hurley says his dad was active in their church and lived in the same home for decades.
