Off-Duty Prince George's County Police Officer Davon McKenzie Killed In Motorcycle Crash
PRINCE GEORGE'S CO., Md. (WJZ) -- An off-duty Prince George's County police officer died Tuesday after his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle, according to authorities.
Police said Officer Davon McKenzie was riding in the Southbound lanes of I-495 at Route 202 around 11 p.m. when the accident happened. He died a short while after the accident at the hospital.
"The Prince George's County Police family is broken hearted at the loss of this young officer and only son," said Chief Hank Stawinski. "He was well respected and loved by his fellow officers. I, on behalf of all of us who were at the hospital and all those who couldn't be, extend our deepest condolences to his family."
County Executive Angela Alsobrooks released a statement, saying" "My heart breaks for this young officer, and his family, who was taken from us far too soon. Officer Davon McKenzie, who took the oath to protect and serve the citizens and residents of Prince George's County more than two years ago, had a bright future ahead of him. I ask that God be with Officer McKenzie's family and friends, the men and women of our police department, and the members of our community during this time of great sadness. My prayers and thoughts of love, and those of the Prince George's County community are with each of them."
Gov. Larry Hogan also said, "We are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Officer Davon McKenzie, a dedicated member of the Prince George's County Police Department. Our most sincere prayers are with his loved ones and his law enforcement family during this time of great sorrow. "
The 24-year-old officer joined the department in March 2017. He was assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
