Police Seek Public's Help Identifying Mt. Vernon Sexual Assault Suspect
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A warning for women in Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood, after police say a man sexually assaulted a woman inside her home.
Derek Valcourt has details on the crime and the suspect police are trying to find.
Police do have images of the suspect, but they're not exactly clear, so they're asking for the public's help.
Surveillance cameras captured an image of the man police say is responsible for sexually assaulting a woman in Baltimore's Mount Vernon cultural district.
News of the attack has raised alarms.
"It scares me. This is a nice neighborhood, but you would never think that would happen," said Molly Galvin.
It happened just before 3 a.m. Monday in the 900-block of North Calvert Street. The victim was walking home from work when she was approached by an African American man.
"This male pulled out a knife, threatened the young lady, forced her into her home and proceeded to sexually assault her," said Anthony Guglielmi," Baltimore Police Department.
Police say once inside the home, the suspect not only sexually assaulted the woman, he stole her money and her cell phone.
After the assault, the man forced the woman out of the house into the neighborhood, where cameras captured them walking down the street. The blacked out portion of the photo is the victim.
The suspect is described as a light skinned black male, about 5'7" tall, thin build, slight facial hair, wearing a dark blue jacket and a chain with a huge medallion.
Women who work and live in the area say it's a reminder to take precautions.
"Every time we go out, we try to go out as a group so we don't go out alone," said Rosa Martin.
"You always make sure that you have your cell phone on you, but you don't want to talk on it while you're walking down the street," said Samantha Ribb.
"I hope he gets caught. I really hope he gets caught and gets what he deserves. I really do," said Dynisha Woods.
Police say while they continue to hunt the suspect down, they'll increase patrols through the neighborhood with both marked patrol units and plan clothes officers.
