Police Reveal Identity of Possible "Aviator" Serial Bank Robber
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Police have released the name of the man they say robbed a Pikesville Wells Fargo, resulting in an officer fatally shooting a man.
A man hidden by large aviator sunglasses, the suspect initially referred to as "The Aviator," is 45-year-old Michael Stratton. Police say he's a suspect wanted by the FBI.
Baltimore County Police say he's the one who robbed a Wells Fargo bank in Pikesville, and they believe he's been involved in several bank robberies in the area. He appeared at the teller passing a note, and fled in a car following the heist.
Following the robbery Friday afternoon, police shut down a likely escape route at Old Court and Falls Road, when things took an unexpected turn. Police say Stratton and his getaway driver, now identified as 33-year-old Oddis Colvin, tried to get around the blockade, nearly running over police.
"He encounters this vehicle at some point during the encounter he fires several shots. The shots strike one person in the vehicle the other person was not hit," said Corporal John Wachter, Baltimore County Police.
A shot from Sky Eye Chopper 13 shows the aftermath of the crash that followed.
No others were injured. Police say Colvin died after the shooting. Witnesses describe the chaos to WJZ, "I was just helping some customers and suddenly we just heard 4 or 5 shots go around the corner."
Police say no gun was found in the suspect's car but they did find bank property and some cash. There is also some body cam footage not of the shooting itself, but from a responding officer that has yet to be released.
