Police: Montgomery Co. Officer Shoots, Kills Armed Man
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County police say they are investigating the fatal shooting by a county police officer of an armed man who refused to drop an ice pick that he was wielding during a dispute with another man.
Police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said the officer came upon a dispute between two men outside the City Place Mall on Colesville Road in Silver Spring at 5:14 p.m. Saturday.
Baur said that when one of the individuals yelled that the other had a knife, the officer "gave verbal commands to the other man to drop his weapon. He refused and the officer fired."
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police were identifying him Saturday. Baur said she did not know if the man had waved or lunged with the knife.
The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation. His name was not immediately released.
