Police: Woman Sexually Assaulted At Knifepoint While Jogging In Fells Point
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A downtown community is on edge after an unusual attack right along the Fells Point waterfront. A female jogger was sexually assaulted early Friday morning. And now, the suspect is still on the loose.
Meghan McCorkell has the alarming details.
Police are increasing patrols throughout the Fells Point community following this alarming attack.
It was between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Friday. A woman was jogging in Fells Point when a man with a knife attacked. He dragged her to a darkened area and sexually assaulted her.
People who normally jog this path along Fells Point are in shock.
"Especially since we walk this way to get to our cars after work and we run after work," Jennifer Cornish, who works in Fells Point, said.
Police are now relying on surveillance cameras across the area to try to find a clue that leads to the attacker.
"There is a lot of surveillance video in that area. Lot of businesses, lot of residents that have surveillance networks so detectives have a lot of footage that they can comb through," Anthony Guglielmi, spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department, said.
Investigators say the man may have been wearing a mask. Workers at the Bond Street Wharf received an email warning about the attack.
"Any women that are walking by themselves to watch out. If they are to walk to the cars by themselves to go up to the security guard and get them to escort them out of the building," Steve Henson, who works at the Bond Street Wharf, said.
Police have increased their presence there but some joggers are steering clear.
"I don't know. I have dogs. Probably take my dogs with me but probably just go to the gym. It's a little frightening," Jackie Kopp, who lives in Fells Point, said.
There's fear in this community until the attacker is caught.
Investigators are going through hours of surveillance footage and plan to reinterview the victim.
Police suggest people in Fells Point jog with another person, especially if it is dark out.
