Police said they received a call for a shoplifting incident at the Dollar Tree just before 4:30 p.m. The suspect was seen walking across the parking lot by approaching officers.
Officers saw the man pull out at least one weapon and run through the parking lot, police said.
"There were weapons in the suspect's hands during the altercation," Shawn Vinson, Baltimore County Police Corpral, said. "We are trying to confirm what exactly those weapons were, and during the actual shooting, the officers felt threatened and they fired their service weapons."
The suspect ran into the Aldi store. Several employees had to flee and hide, and there was an altercation between the officers and the suspect inside the Aldi store.
Police say that the suspect refused to follow orders, which is when at least one officer shot him.
Witnesses say they believe that the suspect was carrying a machete.
"We brefiely made eye contact, and it registered. Like, 'Oh my God, that's a machete,'" Sonja Wallace, a witness, said. "He turned around and went back, and I overheard the cops saying put the weapon down. I was like, where do I go and what do I do? Then I heard the shots happen before I made it to the back of the store."
The suspect was taken to an area hospital.
Police have not released the suspect's condition or name.
