Man Killed In Canton Police-Involved Shooting
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Gunshots wake a quiet Northeast Baltimore neighborhood. The police-involved shooting killed one man and wounded two others.
As Gigi Barnett reports, it is one of several shootouts with police this year.
For this Canton neighborhood, homeowners say they're not used to this kind of violence.
The 3400-block of Foster Avenue near Canton is quiet. Neighbors woke up late Thursday night to a much different scene.
"It was a lot of guns, a lot of guns went off. My son came down and he said, 'That's not no fireworks,'" a woman said.
What homeowners heard was a running shootout between police and one of their neighbors.
City detectives say the gun battle started as a domestic dispute between a man, his wife and her sister.
"She went from loud screaming, it sounded like 'stop' or 'no' or something. Then I heard two shots," said Jamari Heim, neighbor.
Someone called police. Once they arrived, investigators say the officers began writing a police report. That's when they heard screams from inside the house and gunfire.
When they confronted the unidentified 42-year-old man, they say he turned his gun on them. Officers returned fire, striking the man in the chest.
"He died as a result of that confrontation with police and fortunately, the two female victims are going to pull through, they're going to be OK," said Anthony Guglielmi, Baltimore Police spokesman.
This is the eighth police-involved shooting of this year and the second time a shootout with police has turned deadly in 2013.
"They were in the right place at the right time. And they took down somebody who wasn't doing good things in that neighborhood," said Guglielmi.
Neighbors say Thursday night's shootout is the kind of violence this block doesn't see, and it's no reason to leave the neighborhood.
"My kid's been trying to get me to go for a long time. I like it here," a woman said.
Police say both women were shot by the suspect. Bullets hit one woman in the ear and another in the arm. Doctors are expecting both of them to recover.
Police say the next step now is identifying the suspect. So far, officers have informed his next of kin and his name should be released soon.
