Off-Duty Prince George's County Sheriff's Deputy Fires At Man Trying To Steal Car, Police Say
BOWIE, Md. (WJZ/AP) — An off-duty Maryland sheriff's deputy shot at a suspect who was trying to steal a car on Wednesday morning, a police chief confirmed.
At around 1:30 a.m., three suspects were seen pulling on car doors in the 1400 Block of Dunleigh Drive.
Officers arrested two of the suspects after a brief foot chase, but the third got away, he added. That's when the off-duty deputy, who was nearby at the time, saw someone trying to steal a car in the area, confronted the man and fired at him, the department said.
A person matching that description was seen stealing a car in the same area. An off duty Prince George's County Sheriff's Deputy pulled up to the suspect and discharged their weapon.
The suspect was seen fleeing in a blue Jeep Compass that hasn't been found. No injuries have been reported.
The Bowie Police Department is investigating the thefts and the Prince George's County Police Department is investigating the weapon discharge.
