Woman Killed; Fire Now Investigated As Arson

BALTIMORE (WZJ)--An early morning fire at a Northeast Baltimore building leaves one woman dead and several others injured.

WJZ's Amy Yensi has more on why homicide detectives are joining the investigation.

It took fire crews about a half hour to put out the flames consuming a building on the 5200 block of Frankford Avenue.

Crews who rushed to the two-alarm blaze at around 5:30 Friday morning battled the fire and also found a woman's body in one of the apartment.

"This fire was set intentionally. There's a person out there right now who's responsible for this. We don't know exactly the reason why this was set. We don't know if this was a domestic incident we don't know who the target of this incident was," said Baltimore Police Spokesperson, T.J. Smith.

About seven other people were able to escape with cuts and bruises, one sustained broken bones and is being treated at an area hospital.

"This could have been a larger tragedy because seven other people were likely asleep when the fire started. Fortunately they were able to escape," Smith said.

Fire and homicide detectives are now working together on the arson that turned deadly.

Police say the fire took some preparation and they're hoping someone saw something that can help them figure out who did this and why.

Anyone with information is urged to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100
