Police Investigate Correctional Officer's Murder
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- There are new details in the weekend murder of a Maryland correctional officer. WJZ learns police were called out to the victim's apartment hours before the murder to stop a fight. Derek Valcourt has more.
Police confirm they responded to what neighbors called an ugly argument between the victim and her boyfriend. Less than a day later, she was shot to death.
At the Cold Spring Station apartments, the murder of 28-year-old Sheron Jones has devastated many neighbors, including Malinda Pinder, who knew Jones since she was four.
"It's sad, it really is," Pinder said.
Neighbors tell WJZ Jones and her live-in boyfriend got into a loud fight over the weekend.
"It was Friday night, Saturday morning, about 4:30 in the morning," Pinder said.
Police confirm they were called to the apartment for a domestic dispute.
Pinder lives next door.
"They came out and they talked to her and I sat over there for a little while and then the police left and once they left, I came back in there with her," Pinder said. "I said, `Don't stay here. Why don't you go stay in your mother's house?' She says, `I'm not staying here. I'm going over to a friend's house."
Early Sunday morning, Jones was shot to death at her friend's house in the 1700 block of Aisquith Street in east Baltimore. When detectives came to search her apartment for clues later that day, they found blood on the door and assumed the killer was still inside. After a tense three-hour standoff, police realized the apartment was empty.
Grief counselors were on hand Monday at the Division of Pre-Trial Services, where Jones worked for six years in their transportation unit.
Meanwhile, neighbors hope her killer is brought to justice.
"I just don't understand it because she was very nice and loved," Pinder said.
Police say they have not spoken with the victim's boyfriend. Officially, they would not say whether he was a suspect or even a person of interest in the case.
Jones was the mother of a three-year-old girl. That girl is with other family members.
