Police: Hospital Slaying Likely Wasn't Random

BETHESDA, Md. (WJZ) -- There's a murder mystery at a Montgomery County hospital.  Police are trying to figure out who killed an engineer inside Suburban Hospital in Bethesda on New Year's Day.

Derek Valcourt has more.

Officially, police have no motives and no suspects but family members of the victim say they believe he was robbed.

Roosevelt Brockington, 40, was stabbed to death inside Suburban Hospital New Year's Day.  His murder prompted a four-hour lockdown as police went room to room searching for the killer, a killer they never found.  Brockington worked as Suburban's head engineer and was found in an area of the hospital away from patients.

Police aren't releasing many details, but the victim's mother says her son was on the phone with a friend when he was robbed and killed.  She says the friend on the other end of the phone could hear a robber demand money from Brockington, who did not resist.

Montgomery County Police won't comment on the possible robbery.  A spokesperson says they're focused on trying to find out who would have wanted to harm Brockington.

"What we know now at this stage of the investigation is that it is more likely that this is not a random act," said Lucille Baur, Montgomery County Police.

For now, they're interviewing Brockington's friends and co-workers as they hunt for clues.

Detectives are asking the public for help with this case.  Anyone with information is urged to call Montgomery County Police.

It's the first murder in Montgomery County this year.  Last year, there were only 17 murders in Montgomery County.
