Police Helicopter Rescues Hiker On Appalachian Trail
FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- A Maryland State Police helicopter crew has rescued a hiker who was suffering from a medical problem on the Appalachian Trail.
Police say a 911 caller reported a sick hiker on the trail near High Rock and Fort Ritchie. The hiker was at the bottom of a steep cliff, and the remote location meant it would take too long to rescue the person by ground.
A helicopter crew was dispatched from Frederick and located the victim. Rescuers on the ground helped the hiker into a basket, and the person was hoisted into the helicopter to receive medical care. The hiker was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
