Police: Halethorpe Man Shoots Teen Suspect Trying to Break Into His Car

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A Halethorpe man shot a teenage suspect who he said was trying to break into his car, Baltimore County police say.

Just after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers responded to a home in the 100 block of Hazel Avenue.

The investigators say a 44-year-old man saw a person breaking into his vehicle so he took a rifle outside and confronted the him.

He says the suspect swung a knife or screwdriver, so he shot him.

The 17-year-old suspect, now identified by police as Timothy James Rivera of the 200 block of Furrow Street, fled the scene, but was later located and taken into custody.

He was treated at an area hospital for a gunshot wound to an upper extremity and has been charged as an adult with first-degree assault, theft and related charges. He is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

The incident is under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Violent Crimes Unit.

After the investigation is complete, the actions of the man who shot Rivera will be reviewed by the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office.
