Phelps: I'm Retiring From Olympics After Rio
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Michael Phelps plans to retire from Olympics swimming following the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, the swimmer announced in a Facebook live stream on Saturday.
At 31, the Baltimore native has racked up 28 Olympic medals, including a record 23 gold medals, so far -- that's counting five gold medals and a silver medal won in Rio.
On Facebook, Phelps fielded questions from fans for about an hour as he and teammates lounged around their lodgings in the Olympic Village. "Go for 30 medals in Tokyo? I don't think so, boys and girls," he said at one point. "I'll be in Tokyo, I'll say that. No competing."
"Not going four more years, this is it. Tonight's the last time I'll be suiting up and racing at this level," said Phelps.
Throughout the video, Phelps answered questions about everything from his favorite coffee (Starbucks cold brew, sorry Dunkin Donuts lovers) to his post-Rio plans -- traveling and spending time with family.
He even spoke candidly about his win in the 200m butterfly and what was going through his head during his pre-race routine when he made the now-famous Phelps face, which has become an overnight meme.
"I don't know what it was, I was just making a face," he said.
Still, his teammate and rival Ryan Lochte isn't convinced, saying he expects to see Phelps return for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
