Pepco Buys UMd.'s Solar Home Contest Winner
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- The University of Maryland says Pepco is buying the solar home that won the school top honors in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition.
The university says Pepco will place the home at one of its Montgomery County facilities, where it will serve as a living
classroom demonstrating clean energy options.
The Solar Decathlon last fall involved 10 contests that measured university-built houses on factors including performance, livability and affordability. The winning home had to produce as much or more energy than it consumed.
Maryland's entry, called WaterShed, includes water-saving as well as energy-saving technologies. In addition to solar panels and a solar water heating system, the house has sloping roof sections that funnel water to an artificial wetland.
The sale price was not disclosed.
