Penn National May Bid For New Md. Casino

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- A casino operator that lobbied against expanded gambling in Maryland is now considering a bid to operate a new casino in Prince George's County.

Penn National Gaming spent more than $40 million trying to persuade Maryland voters not to authorize a sixth casino and table games in the state. The company owns a slots-only casino in Perryville and a casino in Charles Town, W.Va., that draws many customers from Maryland and the Washington area.

Penn National spokeswoman Karen Bailey tells The Washington Post that the company is considering a bid for Maryland's new casino license. She declined to elaborate on the company's plans.

Penn National also owns Rosecroft Raceway, a potential location for the new casino. Meanwhile, MGM Resorts is hoping to build a high-end casino at National Harbor.
