Parts Of Maryland See A White Christmas (Eve)

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's a white Christmas Eve across Maryland. A winter storm dumped snow across our region and that wreaked havoc on the roads, especially to the north and west.

Meghan McCorkell is keeping an eye on conditions.

We're seeing a lot of wet roads out there. The State Highway Administration is now out in full force hitting trouble spots.

Cars slid sideways off the road in Frederick County. US Rt. 40 alternate in Middletown turned into a treacherous climb. Plows worked to clear the snow as the county enacted a snow emergency plan.

In nearby Carroll County, state police say there were too many weather-related accidents to count. Joe Prochaska had a white-knuckled drive from Montgomery County to Baltimore.

"I mean 30, 40 miles an hour we were going down Route 70 and everybody was just in two lanes. It wasn't plowed to the side. Everybody was taking their time," Prochaska said.

In Baltimore County, fire dispatch dealt with several crashes in the Cockeysville area.

"I actually drive slow. Makes me scared to drive in the snow so I just drive slow," said Tameria Daye.

"Can't speed. Take your time; wherever you're going, it will be there," said Lloyd Jeffers.

Snow has accumulated on the sidewalk and on the grass but it's really the slushy wet mess on the roads right now that has state highway officials concerned. They're worried as the temperature falls, all of this could turn to ice.

"We're keeping a very close eye on those pavement temperatures that are hovering around freezing. We're salting right now and salt is very effective in these temperatures with this type of precipitation," said Lora Rakowski, State Highway Administration.

Five hundred crews have been called in to keep the roads passable this Christmas Eve.

Officials are warning people to go slow Monday night. There may be some icy patches on the road.

Snow emergency plans have now been enacted in Garrett, Frederick and Washington counties.
