Heavy Rains Cause Scattered Power Outages, Road Closures Across Md.
BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) -- Sunday proves to be one of the wettest days of 2012 after several parts of Maryland experience five to six inches of rain. A Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) spokesman says heavy rains are causing scattered power outages and road closures.
MEMA spokesman Ed McDonough says Talbot County has been hit the hardest with heavy rains leading to some road closures on Sunday. The spokesman says about 6,000 power outages have been reported statewide.
Parsonsburg in Wicomico County got the highest amount of rain with 6.18" with Salisbury and Bishopville in Worcester County following closely at 4.73" and 4.66" respectively.
Downtown Baltimore got more than three inches of rain. Towson got 1.45", Annapolis 2.17" and Princess Anne in Somerset County got 3.10".
The heavy rain caused the Maryland State Fair to close early, but it is expected to open again Monday.
For most of the afternoon, parts of the state were under thunderstorm warnings and flash flood warnings. There was a flash flood watch in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday.
"Fortunately, the biggest problem has not been wind. It's mostly been a rain event today. The problems we saw with the derecho were exacerbated by the wind, so we don't expect to see widespread power outages like we did then," said Meteorologist Tim Williams.
Williams said the rain could linger through Sunday night and into Monday morning before we see a bit of a break.
The rain may pick up again later Monday morning into afternoon. Thunderstorms are a possibility then, as well.
