Park Service Preparing Exercise Prescription

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Park Service is writing a prescription for outdoor recreation in the Washington area.

The agency says it will spend nearly $85,000 to launch the D.C. Park Prescriptions program later this year.

It involves the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park and other national parks in the District of Columbia and Washington suburbs.

Park Prescriptions is a project that unites health care providers with park managers to promote activities that get people outside and moving.

C&O Canal Superintendent Kevin Brandt says doctors may be encouraged to hand out park and trail information, and parks may hold community events focused on health and wellness.
