Park Service Praises C&O Lockhouse Rental Program
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The National Park Service is giving high raise to a program offering vacation rentals in the Chesapeake & Ohio National Historical Park.
The park said Thursday that Superintendent Kevin Brandt has won the agency's annual Appleman-Judd-Lewis Award for cultural resources stewardship.
The Canal Quarters program is a joint effort with the C&O Canal Trust. It makes old lockhouses available for overnight stays. Six lockhouses, featuring period furnishings, are available for rent.
The New York Times recently listed Lockhouse 6 near Cabin John as one of "12 Unexpected History Trips." It said the house is a bargain, set amid tranquil surroundings three miles from the District of Columbia.
Brandt says he aims to make the program a model for adaptive reuse of historic buildings.
